December Birthstones: Turquoise, Topaz, and more!

December Birthstones: Turquoise, Topaz, and more!

Though all of you December babies can get a little overlooked sharing your birth month with so many other festivities, you have certainly lucked out with your choice of beautiful birthstones in wonderful wintery blues.

There are actually four stones recognized as December birthstones. We generally focus on the two most common. Blue topaz with its tranquil shades of sky, Swiss, and London blue. As well as turquoise which ranges widely in color and matrix composition and pattern offering endless variations.

Not only do you get those two beauties (and Christmas), but you could also choose Zircon, another amazing blue translucent stone. Or one of my favorites the blue-violet Tanzanite, added more recently to the list.

Turquoise may be the longest used of all gemstones. Cultures around the world from ancient Egyptians, Persians, Tibetans, Aztecs and Native Americans have all treasured turquoise. It was believed to grant power and protection. In present day, turquoise is considered a stone of friendship, opening the heart for giving and receiving love. It is thought to produce positive thinking, serenity, empathy and wisdom.

Topaz was greatly valued by Greeks and Romans and adorned the crowns of European royalty. In Hindu the word topaz means heat, in Sanskrit it means fire. Topaz is a symbol of love and affection and it is said to aid in one's sweetness and disposition. It is used to promote concentration and said to work with ones creative energies. It is thought to promote a sense of calm, openness and honesty and increase the appreciation of beauty.
