MEET THE ARTIST : Anne Sportun

Some jewelry just feels like you the moment you put it on. A little texture, a beautiful stone, the right amount of sparkle… suddenly you’re wondering how you ever got dressed without it.

That’s the appeal of Anne Sportun.

At Chemistry, we’re drawn to jewelry with a recognizable point of view, and Anne has one that feels particularly easy to live with. Her work is relaxed, thoughtful, and quietly distinctive. You can appreciate it immediately, but the little details give you a reason to keep looking.

An artist’s eye, a goldsmith’s hands

Born in Toronto, Anne began making jewelry as a teenager. She eventually set aside her archaeology studies to pursue formal training in jewelry arts, developing the goldsmithing skills that would become the foundation of her work. Her brand has been designing and handcrafting jewelry in Toronto since 1987.

There’s something fitting about that early interest in archaeology. Jewelry is so often an object we attach meaning to: a ring worn through decades, a necklace that reminds us of someone, a small treasure that becomes part of our daily routine.

Anne’s pieces feel at home in that world. Beautiful objects, yes, but also things you can build a life around.

The beauty is in the details

Nature informs Anne’s designs through organic shapes, subtle irregularity, and texture. Think softly rounded gold, gently uneven edges, and diamonds that bring light to a surface without taking over the whole piece.

From a jewelry perspective, that balance takes a good eye. Texture changes the way gold catches the light. Proportion determines whether a piece feels comfortable and natural on the body. The placement of a small diamond can give an otherwise simple design its entire personality.

Those are the details I look for when choosing jewelry for Chemistry. I want the craftsmanship to hold your interest as much as the stone does.

A little color goes a long way

Anne’s gemstone wraps are another lovely expression of her approach. Designed to be worn as a bracelet or necklace, they offer color, versatility, and plenty of room to make them your own.

I love the styling possibilities here: a wrap alongside a favorite gold bracelet, a little color against a white shirt, or another layer added to the pieces you already wear. You don’t need to assemble an entirely new jewelry wardrobe. Sometimes one thoughtful addition makes everything feel fresh.

Fun fact - there was a postage stamp!

Here’s a detail too good to leave out: Anne’s hands and rings were featured on a Canadian 65-cent postage stamp celebrating the craft of goldsmithing. I mean, really - how many artists can make such a claim?!

It’s a pretty wonderful distinction - and I especially love that the image featured her hands. Behind every finished piece is the work of making it: shaping, setting, refining, and knowing when it’s right.

Today, Anne and her daughter Haley are co-owners of the business, bringing two generations of creativity to the collections.

That combination of artistry, skill, and everyday wearability is what makes Anne Sportun such a natural fit for Chemistry. Come try on a few pieces and see what speaks to you. Sometimes the smallest detail is the thing you fall for.
