28 Years on Oak Street | Being Hood River’s Favorite Jewelry Gallery

28 Years on Oak Street | Being Hood River’s Favorite Jewelry Gallery

For nearly three decades, one little storefront on Oak Street has been helping people celebrate life’s biggest moments—and its quietest ones, too.

Chemistry Jewelry has been part of downtown Hood River for 28 years, and while the name has changed, the heart of the gallery has remained consistent: thoughtfully made jewelry, genuine relationships, and a belief that beautiful things should be part of everyday life.

A Story That Didn’t Start With Me

Long before I became the owner, this gallery was known as Silverado Jewelry Gallery. In its early years, it occupied a few smaller spaces up Oak Street before moving into the building we call home today—you can still trace its history by spotting the same wood flooring carried from one location to the next. I spent seven wonderful years managing the gallery before I had the opportunity to purchase it in 2009. Those years shaped me in countless ways, and I look back on them with deep gratitude. They laid the foundation for everything Chemistry Jewelry has become today!

Owning the business wasn’t something I had planned from the beginning. It happened because I had fallen in love with what this gallery represented - a place where artists mattered, craftsmanship was celebrated, customers became friends and the team felt like family.

Since then, Chemistry Jewelry has grown into its own identity while staying true to those original values.

We Believe Jewelry Should Be Worn

Walk into many jewelry stores and you’ll find velvet ropes, locked cases, and an atmosphere that feels intimidating.

That has never been our style.

We want you to try things on. Stack rings you wouldn’t have picked yourself. Mix metals. Ask questions. Bring your dog, wearing your in hiking clothes after a day in the Gorge!

Jewelry isn’t meant to spend its life in a safe, it’s meant to become part of yours.

We Know the People Who Make Our Jewelry

One of the things that makes Chemistry different is that nearly every piece has a story.

We work directly with independent artists from around the country—many of whom have become close friends over the years. We know who made your ring, where the stone came from, and often exactly why an artist designed a piece the way they did.

Instead of carrying thousands of identical items, we curate collections that feel personal, distinctive, and impossible to mass produce.

When you buy a piece here, you’re supporting both a small business and an independent artist.

Luxury Doesn’t Have to Feel Formal

People are often surprised when they walk into the gallery.

The jewelry is fine, but the atmosphere isn’t stuffy.

Our team loves helping someone find an engagement ring just as much as helping someone celebrate a promotion, a birthday, a new baby, or simply making it through a difficult season.

Sometimes the best reason to buy jewelry is simply because it makes you smile.

We think that’s enough :)

Twenty-Seven Years of Relationships

One of my favorite parts of owning this gallery is watching generations of families come through our doors.

We’ve helped customers choose engagement rings, wedding bands, anniversary gifts, graduation presents, retirement gifts, and “just because” treasures.

We’ve celebrated milestones alongside people for decades.

That kind of trust isn’t built through advertising, it’s built one conversation at a time!

Why Chemistry?

People often ask about our name.

Chemistry is the composition of natural materials—the gold, silver, gemstones, and diamonds that become jewelry.

It’s also the invisible connection between people, the spark between two people falling in love, the bond between generations, and the feeling when you find a piece that somehow feels like it was made just for you.

That’s the chemistry we’re celebrating!

Thank You, Hood River

Over twenty-eight years on Oak Street is something we never take for granted.

Whether you’ve been shopping with us since the beginning or you’ve just discovered the gallery, thank you for supporting independent artists, local business, and handmade craftsmanship.

I hope you’ll stop in, try something on, and see why Chemistry Jewelry has become a destination for fine handmade jewelry in Hood River.

Some things are worth experiencing in person :) Hope to see you soon!

🖤 Christine Barthmus, Owner
